How to reset your password when logging out to Windows: the easiest way

There are many ways to restore access to the operating system if the password is forgotten. You cannot find out the password at the entrance, but you can log in to the system: we share one of the simplest methods without using third-party software.

If the operating system is protected by a password, and you have lost it, then do not rush to get upset. You can log into Windows using only a boot disk.

Resetting your password using a boot disk

First of all, go to the BIOS. This can be done by pressing a specific key while the operating system boots. This key may differ depending on the motherboard manufacturer. The most common options are DELETE, F10, F11, F12, F1, F2, F3, Esc. Try different options until you find the one you want. Or check out the specifications on the official developer site.

Then select the media to boot from. Most often, the desired item is located in a tab with a name by type: ” Advanced BIOS Feature s”. Then in the line ” First Boot Device ” you need to select a bootable USB flash drive. Save changes and restart your computer.

After that, regardless of which OS version is on the drive, click on the “System Restore” item in the lower left corner of the window that appears after rebooting. Next, you need to select the command line and enter the command ” copy c: \ windows \ system32 \ sethc.exe c: \ “. With this action, we copied the file that is responsible for sticky keys in Windows to the root directory of the C drive.

Next, without closing the command line, enter the command ” copy c: \ windows \ system32 \ cmd.exe c: \ windows \ system32 \ sethc.exe “. With this command, we replaced the original file that we copied earlier with an executable file that is responsible for starting the command line. A little later, you will understand why we did this.

Now you can restart your computer and remove the bootable USB flash drive. Do not forget to change the boot priority back to BIOS. After the system has booted and you see the field where you need to enter the password, press the ” Shift ” key 5 times. Without our manipulation, a tool would work that prevents keys from sticking, and would notify us with an appropriate sound signal. But due to the fact that we changed the executable file, pressing it multiple times will launch the command line. In the command line that opens, it remains only to enter a new username and a new password using the command ” net user User_name New_password “.

Then you can log into the OS using the updated account details. Finally, don’t forget to put the files back in place. To do this, cut the file named sethc.exe , which will be located in the root folder of the C drive, and paste it to the address ” C: \ Windows \ System32 \ “.
